X-ibit
explores images produced by the radiographic, or X-ray, process. X-rays
are seldom regarded as objects with inherent beauty that merit artistic
interpretation. When doctors examine X-rays, they consider what is wrong
with the bones rather than what is appealing about them. Instead of focusing
on radiography's medical applications, I am interested in exploring how
various media can enhance the flat image that this process creates. The
delicate linear pattern of overlapping bones and the soft shadow of the
surrounding tissue reveal the beauty of the internal structure of the
human body.
I would like to thank the following people for their help and generosity:
The Alberta Children's Hospital, Dr. Charles Beck, Shannon Beck, Anna
Oder, Michael Chokr, Sarah Apgar, Chinook McLean and my other muses. I
would also like to thank my advisors: Andrew Moore, Al Acres, and especially
Betsey Garand, whose support and guidance over the last four years has
been invaluable. I wish the best of luck to my fellow VIS majors. My mother
is finally able to see my work; I hope that it will prove that my decision
to pursue art rather than dentistry was a good one.
