The Personal Archive is composed of works of various media, most of which were completed prior to 1997. Some of them have been purchased, and the rest are in my personal collection. Many of them are self portraits that were completed as a part of a project exploring my ethnicity in art. Written commentary submitted to the College Board's Advanced Placement Program (1997): "Leafing through sketches from my childhood scrawled on napkins, painted on the back of loose-leaf or pasted on cardboard that has since faded with age, I find a large selection of artwork dedicated to self-portraits. It was not childish vanity; what else did I know better than myself? Remember sitting in front of a large mirror with a crayon in one hand and a sheet of paper in the other, simply drawing what I saw. Often, I did not see myself exactly as everyone else saw me. My race being a blend of black and white, I always included an aspect of my heritage by the use of color or images suggesting my ethnicity. It is with great pride and a sense of reminiscence that I choose to use this as my theme for my concentration project." |
