This body of work was completed during a two-month volunteer project in Ghana, West Africa, during the summer of 2000. I lived in a rural village on the Gold Coast and taught Art, Picture Making and Graphic Design to students at the Komenda Senior Secondary School. Through art, I shared my experiences with the youths of Ghana, while at the same time opening myself to their experiences and culture. The series of 57 drawings represent a day-by-day chronicle of my time there. The time that I spent drawing allowed me to observe the local way of life and become more familiar with their culture. My exposure to traditional African art, as well as my interaction with the local people, particularly the children, have profoundly affected my art and my life. It is with great fondness that I remember the crowd of fifteen or twenty children that would gather round to peer over my shoulder each time I would take out my sketchbook and pencils. The opportunity was given to me by the Ghana Education Project: a non-profit organization that aims to improve the lives of Ghanaian youths through education |
