Abbie is currently conducting research towards a PhD as part of the "Impact of Oil" project in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum. Her research involves the technical examination of 15th and 16th-century Dutch oil paintings. Her research focus is:

Changes in paint layer structure in 15th and 16th-century Netherlandish paintings

Abbie's research will focus on changes and innovations in painting technique within this period, specifically how and why layer structures became more simplified from the 15th to the 16th century. Data will be obtained through the technical examination of key paintings from European collections, in particular relying on paint samples taken during restoration. Case studies of specific 15th and 16th-century artists will also be carried out. Thus far, her study has focused on the painting technique of the Leiden School, particularly Cornelis Engebrechtsz and Lucas van Leyden. Future areas of research may include: the function and composition of coloured imprimatura and priming layers, the depiction of texture in fabrics, underdrawing that is visible at the paint surface, and the composition of green and purple areas. Abbie's research began in 01/2008, and will continue part-time until 01/2013.
